What is happening in Room 82 this week?

Reading: Readers will begin to ask themselves these questions:
  • What strategies have I tried to solve these unknown words?
  • Did it work?
  • What else could I try?
By reflecting on what they have tried, the readers will begin to discover when different strategies work best and become more efficient when choosing strategies. Here is a chart of some of the main strategies readers rely on:

Writing: Students will begin writing opinion letters about things that should be changed in our room.Writers will set goals to fix up their writing. They could choose to fix up spelling or punctuation. They could also choose to elaborate by adding more drawings and labels, telling more reasons to convince others of their opinions, or adding speech bubbles. These writers have done a wonderful job finding problems and writing about ways to make them better. They are quite convincing!

Math: One of the main concepts that we want Kindergartners to take away this year is that numbers can be taken apart and put back together. This understanding provides a base for adding, subtracting, multiplying, etc. We have been talking about different ways to build and take apart numbers using this chart:

Science: This week we’re learning about the four classic “seasons.” Your child will be given a series of drawings and look for patterns to figure out the seasons’ order. You can further encourage your child’s curiosity about the weather by going on a “Season Walk."  Go for a walk together and look for clues that help you to know what season it is!

SO much orange! Go K!
The finalists of room 82 battle it out! Karlene was our class winner!

We made windsocks to study wind and weather in science.

March 12-16

This spring weather is crazy! If there is snow on the ground, sending snow pants is appreciated. As the snow starts to melt (hopefully soon!), please continue to send boots as it can be pretty wet on the playground. Thanks!

Here is the link to the lunch menu.
LUNCH MENU CHANGE: March 16th--mini corn dogs will be served instead of pizza dippers.

Upcoming Events:
March 16: Wear green
March 19: Badger sports wear
March 20 & March 22: Parent Teacher Conferences- more info coming soon
March 28: Half Day
March 28: Egg Crack off and class color day- more info to come
March 29-April 2: NO SCHOOL

Reading: To wrap up our nonfiction unit, students will work in nonfiction book clubs to learn all they can about topics they are interested in. After readers read about the same topic, they can talk about the key details and ask “What’s the same? What’s different?” Readers will then be able to invent their own ways to share their books and keep the conversation going!
Some examples of how to share include:
  •  Acting out the book
  • Preparing a read aloud--just like a teacher!
  • Planting questions in the book to ask their "students"
  • Taking notes and sharing what they learned

Writing: As we are nearing the end of our All About writing unit. the writers will be focusing on editing. We will check over our work to make sure we:
  • used lowercase letters in the middle of our sentences
  • used uppercase letters at the beginning of the sentence
  • have snap words spelled correctly
  • have punctuation in our books
  • included an introduction and conclusion
  • included our opinion on some pages
Students will write their final All About piece on Friday that will go into their portfolios! I can't wait to share how far they have come as writers during conferences.

Math: Mathematicians are digging deeper into teen numbers. We know that teen numbers are a group of ten and extras; we will discover that mathematicians can see that when they build numbers OR look at equations. Each student will create a book that shows a picture, equation, and correct way to write the digits for each teen number to solidify this understanding. We will look at partners of the numbers 6-10. Although students are not expected to know these partners fluently, they are expected to build with tools or draw to show the partners to 10. Mathematicians will review position words and shapes this week.

Social Studies: After starting to think about what makes them so special, students will have a chance to show what makes them unique in the following centers:
  • Photographs—We will sort pictures on a timeline. Then students will create their own timelines.
  • Collage—Kindergarteners will look through magazines and cut out things that represent them. They will glue these onto a poster. We will share these at closing circle.
  • Starfall.com—Students will work with partners on Ipads to “write” about themselves

Upcoming Events:
March 5: Culver's Night--have dinner at Culver's and a portion of the proceeds comes back to NDLC! I will be delivering the trays to tables from 5-6:)
March 8: Author's Breakfast
March 9: Half Day
March 16: Wear green
March 19: Badger sports wear
March 20 & March 22: Parent Teacher Conferences- more info coming soon
March 28: Half Day
March 28: Egg Crack off and class color day- more info to come
March 29-April 2: NO SCHOOL

Reading: As nonfiction readers, we have learned how to identify the main topic of our books and retell key details by pointing to text evidence in the book! This week, we will transfer that learning by teaching others about our topics and writing about them. Students will act out their books and read aloud (just like a teacher!) to share their books and learn with peers. We will celebrate our nonfiction unit on Friday by creating posters about our favorite main topics. Check around the hallways of school to view your child's work!

Writing: We will make their books the best they can be by adding more details and fixing up all conventions. Students will use a checklist to help them get ready to publish. We are excited to share our all about books on Thursday during our Author's Breakfast! Stop by between 7:15-7:45 to read our books! After publishing a book to share for Author's Breakfast, writers will be encouraged to keep writing EVEN more all about books to fill their folders!

Here is one of the checklists the writers will use:

Math: Mathematicians will learn about "magic number equations". Magic number equations make everything disappear! For example, 3-3, 5-5, etc. Students will be able to practice this skill by making a snack disappear:) Here are all the patterns we have learned to help us add and subtract so far:
  • When you +1, you count up
  • When you -1, you count backwards
  • When you +0 or -0, the number stays the same
  • When you subtract a number from the same number, it disappears to make 0
Mathematicians have been learning that there are some equations that they just know by thinking of the pattern, but there are some equations that they may need to solve using a strategy. We will introduce this chart as a reminder of the strategies the Kindergartners can use to solve addition and subtraction equations.

Science/Social Studies: We will start to build a base for our Self Study inquiry with a read aloud, video aloud, and song. Students will have whole class conversation about the book It’s Okay to be Different by Todd Parr. We will create a class book after watching a video of a poem called, “I am Me!” Here is the link  to the poem. Each student will add a page that says, “No one _____ the way I ____.” Finally, we will create a self-portrait after listening to  the song “What I Am” by Will.I.Am. Here is the link to the song. I am excited for students to start thinking about what makes them special…we know they are!

Hello NDLC Families,
Enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year is underway and we have a few spots available in Kindergarten! We find that word of mouth is the best way to market our school.
If you have friends or family with upcoming Kindergarten-aged students, please share what you love about our school! As always, families can also call Mrs. Frischmann at 766-6116 to set up individual tours.

Happy Summer!
